What is The Split?
From round 12 onwards the Men’s Senior competition splits into two divisions, based on the ladder position. The top six teams will continue in the Men’s State League and State League Reserves. Whereas the bottom five teams will move into the Championship League and Championship League Reserves.
Regardless of ladder position, the reserves team will follow their State League team into the same division.
They will the play the final five games in these divisions, following up with finals. The top four in the State League will play in a three-week finals series. While the top 3 in the Championship League will play in a two-week finals series.
The competition has just reached the “Split” in the season with Williamstown going undefeated and into the State League. Footscray and MCC trail along both with eight wins a piece, with Malvern following closely with 7. Can Caulfield or Camberwell, make a late season comeback to knock off one of these teams, or will they prevail to go onto finals?
Over in the Championship Eltham sits pretty on top of the ladder with 6 wins. Brunswick comes in closely in second with 4 wins for the season. It will be a tight race to the end, with Surrey Park, Altona, and Chadstone all within a game of each other, fighting for the last finals position.
While there is no script for the ending of these two competitions, we do know that it will be a close one as we head for the pointy end of the season and well worth the watch.
