Lacrosse Victoria’s U12 division brought the energy, excitement, and early winter sunshine to Melbourne this past weekend, June 14–15, with three spirited tournaments across the city. The events celebrated youth lacrosse development with a fun, fast-paced format that featured teams from across the region.
Saturday Spotlight: Boys Tournaments East and West
Saturday, June 14th, was all about the boys, with the East Tournament hosted at Lower Eltham Park by the Eltham Lacrosse Club and the West Tournament played at Fleming Park, home of the Brunswick Lacrosse Club.
East Tournament Recap – Kangaroos vs. Koalas
The Kangaroos Division featured Eltham, Caulfield/Chadstone, Camberwell Delta, and MCC Blue, while the Koalas Division was made up of Camberwell Echo, Malvern, Camberwell Zulu, and MCC Red.
After a busy morning of games starting at 8:45 AM and a structured playoff format that included crossover finals and a grand finale at 10:30 AM, Camberwell Zulu emerged victorious, defeating Eltham 5–3 in the East Grand Final.
West Tournament Recap – Sharks vs. Crocodiles
Meanwhile, over in the west, the Sharks Division (Brunswick, Williamstown Cities, Footscray Green, Williamstown Fearons) took on the Crocodiles Division (Bendigo, Wyndham/Surrey Park, Footscray White, Williamstown Deacons).
The Williamstown Deacons won in the Grand Final with a commanding 7–4 win over their Williamstown counterparts, the Cities.
Each tournament featured four regular games per team, scheduled in tight intervals to keep the pace brisk. A clever use of byes allowed for well-earned rest breaks, leading into intense crossover and finals action from 9:55 AM onwards.
Sunday Showcase: Girls U12 Take the Field by the Water
Sunday, June 15th, saw the spotlight shift to the Girls U12 Tournament, held at Greenwich Reserve, hosted by Williamstown Women’s Lacrosse Club. Located just steps from the scenic waterfront, the venue provided a beautiful coastal backdrop as teams battled it out under crisp blue skies and chilly winter breezes.
Teams were once again split into fun-themed divisions — the Emus and Kookaburras. The Emus consisted of WWLC, Footscray, Newport Gold, and Camberwell/Chadstone. The Kookaburras lineup included MCC/Malvern, Newport Porters, Newport Black, and Eltham.
Kicking off at 9:45 AM, the girls powered through their matches, culminating in a thrilling Grand Final at 11:30 AM. In the end, Newport Porters edged out Footscray 6–5 in a tightly contested and action-packed finish.
A Weekend to Remember
From Camberwell Zulu’s precision passes to the Deacons’ dominant play and the Porters’ gritty comeback win, the weekend had it all. It was a fantastic showcase of Victoria’s lacrosse talent and the bright future of the sport.
Despite the chill in the air, the enthusiasm on the field was electric. With supportive crowds, crisp passes, and plenty of goals – all set against the backdrop of parks and waterfront views – Lacrosse Victoria’s U12 weekend proved once again that passion and teamwork shine, even in the depths of winter.
