Exciting news out of Newport today! Marlee Paton has won her second State League Women’s Best and Fairest by one vote, narrowly defeating her coach and teammate Stacey Morlang who shared the runners up medal with Footscray’s Theadora Kwas.

Marlee has been at Newport from the age of five, where she followed her mum and extended family into the game. She has remained loyal to the club ever since – not forgetting about a successful stint in the United States for University, of course.

Across the four years at Loyola, Marlee was a two-time captain and was part of 4 x Conference Champions teams leading her to four appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Marlee will be too humble to tell you, but she also won the Big East Conference Midfielder of the Year in 2012 and was a two-time All American.

Back home, Marlee has represented Victoria from the age of 11 in the U15 level through to seniors. At international level, Marlee has been involved in three Australian campaigns – one Under 19 and two Senior Teams in 2009 and 2013.

Reflecting on her year, Marlee said: “This year we had an amazing group, some of whom had returned to the game after time off, and we were led by our player coach, Stacey Morlang which was so fun. Newport prides ourselves on our culture, and this year was no different. With the passing of our club hero, Sue Sofarnos, we wanted to play the game for her and support the whole family through this year.

Stacey has an amazing ability to inspire and connect with her players. She is fearless on the field and a true leader by example. Her strong philosophies of inspiring and leading women resonates with all our players. She ensures we always keep the focus on our team and on how we can make each other better teammates and players.”

Marlee looks forward to continuing to support and be a part of the Newport Ladies Lacrosse Club and hopes the season gets back to normal in 2022!

Stacey and former LV Chair, Theadora Kwas, were runners up, each claiming 12 votes – one short of Marlee. Marlee polled in six matches whilst Theadora and Stacey polled in five.
