Following the 2019 Lacrosse Victoria AGM, a different Board member will be featured in the 2020 Lacrosse Victoria Board Meet Me Monday Series. These profiles will match faces with names as well as provide some background into our new and returning Board members. So far, we have profiled Meredith Hodson, Simon Atkins and Elena Theinschnack.

Our fourth profile of the series will be Damian Raper. Damian joined the Board in April 2019. Damian’s answers are in bold.

Name: Damian Raper

How Long have you been on the Board: 1 year

Role on the Board: Ordinary Director

Sports Background: 9 years involvement in High Performance sport, working with Geelong Football Club, Essendon Football Club, Australian Institute of Sport and Rugby Australia

Affiliated Club (if any): Nil

Everyday Job: Senior Consultant for EDGE10 Group – a sports data management firm assisting professional sporting clubs to maximize their analysis of sports science, medical, coaching and scouting data.

Where are you Originally From: Sydney

Why did you run for a Board position: An interest in the wider administration of sporting organisations as a whole, not just the High Performance Department.

Favorite Athlete and Sports Team: Difficult to say. Having worked in High Performance sport for a long time, I understand the challenges of being successful so have a huge admiration (and fascination) for organisations who have been able to achieve sustained success for prolonged periods of time – Hawthorn & Sydney Swans in the AFL, Melbourne Storm in NRL, Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and Barcelona in European Soccer, New England Patriots in NFL, Canterbury Crusaders in Rugby Union, Dave Brailsford and Team Sky / Team Ineos from cycling.

During my time at Geelong Cats, I was lucky enough to work closely with Joel Selwood. You won’t find a better bloke in Australian sport in my opinion.

If you could play any position on the field which one would you choose: Defender – loved to take an intercept in my mixed Netball days!

What do you enjoy most about lacrosse/the lacrosse community: The passion that the Lacrosse community has for the game. If this passion can be harnessed correctly, I can only see the game going from strength to strength.
