Lacrosse encyclopedia and Lacrosse Victoria Historian, Doug Fox submitted a very interesting piece on former Victorian great Dave Norman. The following piece was written by Doug.

From time to time the name of one of the great past players of Victorian lacrosse pops up in conversation and no-one seems to know what happened to them or where they are today.

Welcome back Dave Norman, ex Caulfield and Victorian face-off star.  He played nine senior Interstate games with the Big-V between 1969-74 and represented Australia against the USA Lancers in 1970.

Well not quite welcome back, as Dave lives these days in San Carlos, California with his wife and shows no sign of returning home.  He is retired after an engineering career in Silicon Valley where he played some fun lacrosse for many years with the local Palo Alto Lacrosse Club.

It was the LV website story on the passing of Phil Humphreys that prompted Dave to make contact. For years he has had in his possession a well-preserved copy of the Illustrated Sydney News, Thursday 27 September, 1888.  It was passed to him by his brother who found it while renovating a home in Brisbane fifty or so years ago.  Inside the paper is a four-page spread on lacrosse with history, tips and illustrations on how to play.  It was published a few years after lacrosse became established in Sydney.

Despite having carefully looked after this intriguing piece of lacrosse history for fifty years, Dave decided that it would be better housed in Australia so he has donated it to the lacrosse history archives.

Dave is happy to hear from any of his old lacrosse mates, so send him a hello – David Norman wooktink@comcast.net

WANTED If you are someone who has interesting old lacrosse photos or memorabilia, do what Dave Norman has done – either loan them for copying and we will return them, or donate them so that they can be preserved in the archives as part of the history of lacrosse in Australia.
