Lacrosse Victoria held its first box lacrosse exhibition session for females last Wednesday night with over 15 participants in attendance.

Box lacrosse, which is vastly different to the outdoor game in terms of numbers on the field, equipment, game style and is growing in popularity throughout the world and has seen a very successful Men’s competition evolve over many years in Victoria and has seen interest peak to the point of delivering a session for women and girls.

The session aimed at introducing females of all ages and skill levels to box lacrosse was based upon learning the different rules and training the basic skills. After the skills session there was an exhibition game so the women and girls could translate all of their learnings into gameplay.

Alan Lewer who coordinated and delivered the session in consultation with Lacrosse Victoria hailed the event as a real success.

“It was great to see a strong number of women and girls attend the session and everyone who participated really enjoyed learning the different skills and strategy of the indoor game” Lewer Said.

While the participants possessed a variety of skill levels all the way from experienced right down to novice level Lewer mentioned the pace and skill of the game and goal scoring abilities as a highlight of the evening.

“The girls naturally possess the skill of protecting their stick and ball retention, which is a vital part of box lacrosse, along with the team mentality of passing and moving the ball.  The skills and scoring were a highlight of the evening as many women and girls were trying the box version of lacrosse for the first time. Everyone that attended really enjoyed the evening and even asked when the next session was likely to be” Lewer said.

Lacrosse Victoria is now looking for feedback from the session and is asking women and girls (if you attended the session or not) to fill in a survey via https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/J777Y5W as this will greatly help the planning of future sessions and competitions.
