ALRA Prostate Cancer Awareness Day

On men’s Preliminary Final Day at Eltham Lacrosse Club the referees will once again team up with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) and be dressed in blue to raise funds to:
- Provide research into prostate cancer
- Implement educational programs around prostate cancer
- Support men and their families affected by prostate cancer

Prostate Cancer (PC) Facts

- PC is now the No 1 diagnosed cancer in Australian men and no 2 in mortality.
- Each year approx. 20,000 men are diagnosed, with approx. 3,300 succumbing to the disease.
- It is estimated that, by age 75, 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with PC, whilst at age 85 this risk increases to 1 in 5.
- If detected early, PC has one of the highest 5-year survival rate after diagnosis (approx. 92%)

- The prevalence of a family history of PC increases the risk of a positive diagnosis by 2-3 times.  Therefore, it is suggested that men should commence talking to their GP about PC testing from the age of 40.

On Preliminary Final Day representatives from PCFA will be available to provide information and educational resources to the public and we encourage all supporters of lacrosse to dig deep into their pockets and donate to this worthy cause as referees walk around the grounds with their collection tins.
