Background:

Intervarsity lacrosse has its beginnings in 1905, when the Adelaide University Lacrosse Club (est 1889) made the overland trip to play the Melbourne University Lacrosse Club (est 1883), resulting in a win to the Victorians. For over 100 years, this tradition and rivalry is the oldest and most celebrated in Australian interstate club lacrosse.

In the past century, there have been occasions of additional teams occasionally participating in the Intervarsity, however these expanded events have only been temporary with only the Adelaide and Melbourne Universities maintaining constant lacrosse programs.

Since taking on the role as Director of Development on the Lacrosse SA board, I have undertaken the task of setting up new lacrosse programs for schools, including universities. With help from staff and students in the lacrosse community I started up student clubs at Flinders University and the University of South Australia (who did have a strong women’s lacrosse club in the 1980s and 1990s before folding 5-10 years ago), for the purpose of setting up a university lacrosse culture between SA’s three institutions.

Following this, lacrosse was added to the SA Challenge university sporting competition in 2011, and continued in 2012 and 2013. The format of lacrosse played was a 5-a-side, mixed, non contact rules, sometimes known as "modcrosse", and is a developmental and social version of lacrosse ideally suited where participants range in ability and experience. 5-a-side mixed lacrosse is also practical in an organisational aspect as teams do not need many players, allowing more chance of multi-team and multi-university events.

Building from the success of the local university lacrosse development program, I contacted my interstate counterparts to work towards staging a national university lacrosse tournament. With the help and support of the Adelaide and Melbourne University Lacrosse Clubs (note – not all members of these clubs are students), we organised for the tournament to be held in conjunction with the annual men’s and women’s field lacrosse matches between AULC and MULC. The traditional Intervarsity contests are held between Adelaide and Melbourne in alternate years, and the 2013 event was hosted in South Australia on the 12th of October.

With the event being held in Adelaide, participation from the three SA universities was assured, as well as Melbourne, who had many students within their club to call upon. Some interest was also shown from WA and Queensland; at one point the newly-formed James Cook University Lacrosse Club in Cairns were going to send a team before they found the cost of flights to be prohibitive. Monash University were also committed to sending a team but unfortunately withdrew in the week before the tournament. However, there was interest from New South Wales, despite not being a lacrosse stronghold. A team of students from Sydney, Macquarie and Wollongong universities came to Adelaide, participating under a "NSW Combined Universities" team banner, adding some more interstate flavour to the tournament.

Tournament:

The tournament was played to a round-robin format, with each team playing all others, before heading to a semi final round, with the semi final winners playing off in the final. Unfortunately some last minute withdrawals affected Flinders’ team, who needed to be topped up with players from other teams to continue their participation, including a lone participant from Victoria University, and as such were made ineligible for the semi finals. The minor round matches were played in the morning, followed by a break in which the women’s Intervarsity field match was played, before the semi finals and final was played. The men’s Intervarsity field match followed on from the 5-a-side tournament final.

Standings after the round-robin: UniSA, NSW Combined, Flinders (ineligible), Melbourne, Adelaide

In the 1st v 4th semi final, UniSA accounted for Adelaide Uni 14 goals to 8, while the NSW Combined Universities team had a 6-0 shutout of Melbourne Uni.

The final was a close tussle in the first half, with great lacrosse skills being shown, both attacking and defensive, with scores locked at 3-all at half time. In the second half however, the New South Welshmen went on a scoring rampage to run out comfortable winners, 14 to 9.

Annual Intervarsity Match:

In the Intervarsity field lacrosse matches, the Adelaide University Lacrosse Club women’s team continued on their recent domination of the Melbourne University Lacrosse Club with a comfortable 18-2 victory to add to the Penguins’ premiership success in the 2013 Lacrosse SA Division 1 Women’s Competition.

In the men’s match, Adelaide Uni scored a surprise upset win over the more highly-fancied Melbourne Uni team, with a nail-biting 8-7 triumph.
