Altona taking on Caulfield in the U14s
The opening round for the Under 14 division of the 2012 lacrosse
season opened with a cracker. All ten teams travelled to Camberwell
Lacrosse Club for in the Under 14 Lightning Games to open the
season. With over 120 players, the action was thick over five,
smaller-than-standard fields, playing six a side.
With many draws being seen over the first three rounds of the
five-round event, one of the stronger performances on the day was
from Footscray: not seeing a single goal scored against them. By
playing shorter games in a Gymkhana-style event, the intention of
this unorthodox start to the season was to get an indication of the
level of each of the competing teams this year and produce a draw
that reflects the results.
The pace of the opening few games
caught a few teams by surprise, but by the second round all teams
were quick off the mark and few opportunities were being wasted. It
was a fantastic sight to see ab entire age-group playing on the
same ground with such competitiveness, and so early in the
season: duly aided by the fantastic sunny weather and great quality
turf!
From the results on the day, we're expecting a very closely
contested Under 14 competition in 2012, and we hope
the fierce competition remains during the season for many
more close games. We trust that all participants enjoyed the
event and hope that this type of event can become a mainstay on the
lacrosse calendar in the future.
