Box Lacrosse in 1932?

A recent headline on the Lacrosse Victoria website trumpeted the return of box lacrosse to Melbourne.

Those of you who are old enough to remember will recall the feisty box lacrosse contests of the 1930's when the Wattle Path Palais de Danse on The Esplanade in St Kilda was taken over for a post-season, six-a-side indoor competition.

They were promoters par excellence in those days and organized dancing between the matches to bring the ladies along.  Admission one shilling and a penny

As part of the 1932 season, a Victoria v Rest of Australia box lacrosse match was played at the Palais on the 1st September and won by Victoria 10 goals to 6.  Corbet from University scored 4 goals for Victoria, Kerrigan of Camberwell 3, Cutts from University 2 and Williamstown's Mc Neilage 1.  Foster (Malvern) and Denby (Caulfield) were the other Victorian team members.

Thank you to the LV  Historian Doug Fox for putting this together.
