The 2013 Lacrosse season has started at last, with the opening round of State League Women's and Men's competition being played on Saturday, 13th of April, up at Bendigo for the 2nd year running. LV would like to thank all the members of the Bendigo club and appreciate their excellent contribution to the day. Noting the fantastic weather, the suberb conditions of the grounds and catering appropriate for the event.  Some fine lacrosse was played and people were pleased to be in Bendigo for the day.
It was great to see Bendigo running a development clinic and a game for some of the local school children in the area this year. The Juniors enjoyed the experience of playing Lacrosse in the opening round (Eltham and MCC supplied them with player shirts), watching how the men's teams warmed up and how the game was played at senior level.

The first of the women's games saw Williamstown and Eastside play out a thrilling match with Williamstown defeating Eastside in a close fought out game 6goals to 5.

The second women's game was a repeat of last year's grand final, with Newport again showing they will be the team to beat. The final score being Newport 13 defeating Footscray 7.

The men's games were all played with tremendous spirit with 3 of the 4 games being decided by a goal, indicating it could be a tight competition this year.

The first game was between Eltham and MCC, with Eltham holding 11 goals to 6 lead into the last five minutes. The game looked safe, but MCC with a late rush fell agonisingly short, finally losing 11 goals to 10.

Caulfield and Camberwell again played out a close game with Caulfield finally winning 10 goals to 9.

Williamstown, last year's premiers, showed they will be the team to beat by handing out a reasonably comfortable win 13 goals to 6 over Surrey Park.

The final game was between Malvern and Footscray, both in the finals last year, played out a nail biting finish with Malvern coming out with a 11 to 10 win in overtime.

Chadstone had the bye for the opening round and have started their season with a loss against Surrey Park in round 2 last weekend, the score being 15 to 2.

Interstate Indoor Lacrosse Challenge, Adelaide

A development team from Victoria travelled to Adelaide for the March 9/10 weekend to play a South Australian Team at Blackwood Sports Arena in an effort to help promote the Indoor game in South Australia. The weekend provided much needed time on the boards for our teams to further develop their Indoor Lacrosse skills.

The opening game on Saturday afternoon was a scrappy affair with half of the Vic team only arriving an hour before face off and it took most of the first half for the palyers to straighten their legs from the overnight trip. The final result was a close faught out 14-12 win for the Vics.

After some rest and a swim at Glenelg beach the Vic team fired up and played some true, solid Indoor Lacrosse. With some great defence and fine goal keeping by Trevor Brennan, apart from 2 late goals, the Vics shut out the SA team through the better part of the game to take out a strong 12-5 win to clinch the series.

A lazy Sunday morning swim and back massage at one of Adelaide's famous beaches was just what the Doctor ordered, but proved not to be the best preparation for the final Sunday afternoon game. A local member gave a presentation towards the future of the Indoor game in Blackwood to open the last game of the weekend. After a slow 1-6 first period the Vics pegged back SA to tie the score at the final break (9-9). Unfortunately a clean sweep of the series was not to be, as the tired legs of the Vic team and the thought of the long drive home proved to much to cope with and the SA team closed out a good 14-12 win.

The event proved to be a great success and healthy discussions were held between both States as to how best to fixture the Indoor game into the Lacrosse calendar.

Both teams had a mixture of experience and youth which goes well for the future development of Indoor Lacrosse in Australia. All look forward to the coming Box Lacrosse season from October to December 2013.

It is expected that we will have a Junior competition and possibly a Women's competition to add to the Senior Men's Red Cup and the National Clive Carr Trophy at the end of the season.

The Girls Competition started up on April 21st with the U13 and U15 girls' teams competing. The U18 competition will be starting on May 5th after the return of the Victorian U18 team back from the U18 National Championships in Perth. The competitions have a number of combined teams, in an endeavour to support some clubs lacking in numbers at differing age levels. The U13 competition has 10 teams, U15's 8 teams and the U18's 5 teams, the beginnings of a stronger healthier competition for the girls. The Westside U11 Viclax program kicked off at Williamstown with 25 girls in attendance, a great start for these girls as they begin their careers in Lacrosse. It is hoped that the Eastside clubs can get themselves organised and start their Viclax program in the near future. Without a strong influx of girls, team building in the future becomes impossible. The next Viclax session is at 9:45am at the Greenwich Reserve, The Strand, Neport. If you are interested or know someone please contact Kristen Stone,

U18 Girls National Championship, Perth

Good luck to the U18 Girls Vic Team competing in the 2013 ALA U18 Girls National Championship in Perth, WA! Thanks to our U18 Girls Team representatives Theo Kwas and Sarah Smith we have exclusive footage of the Vic Girls Team's games from the tournament in Perth.
Day 1: Today was our first day of the U18 Nationals. The day began with the opening ceremony, with the flags being raised and Jan Jackson declaring the tournament officially open. The Vic girls played their first game against SA and in an intense fight beat them 18-6, with goalie Eliza Morgan being awarded MVP. Day 2: The Vic girls took on WA today. Victoria ended up on top, with 14-5 victory. It was good to see that the intensity continued to rise throughout the game, which will lift the pace for the rest of the week.
Day 3: Today we had the privilege of playing New Zealand, who travelled to Perth to gain experience for their U19 World Championship Campaign. Victoria came out on top in a 19-3 victory. It was an honour to play against them regardless of the score and we look forward to playing them later on in the week.

U18 Eastside Team is Seeking New Players

Lacrose Victoria is supporting the introduction of an Under 18 Eastside Girls Team, the aim of which is to provide the East and Northern clubs with a chance to have their U18 girls be part of their home club and play in a competetive team at this age level.

Players Wanted:

The team is looking for extra players and would like all clubs involved to try to chase up anyone who may have slipped away from the game or recruit someone new to join this team.

Umpire Wanted:

The U18 Eastside Girls Team is also looking for some support from anyone, who would like to keep fit, be right in the action and would like to represent this team as their designated Umpire. This is a paid position, if accredited.

For more information, please contact your local club or the team managers:

  • Michelle Wiles - 0430 209 271

The Boys' competition started up on April 20th with the U12's playing the first of 2 Lightning Games rounds to enable the teams to get organised and teams to be graded into separate divisions. The U14's played their Lightning round, with the regular competition starting on April 28th. The U16's jumped straight into their season and the U18's, similar to the Girls will start their season proper on may 5th. Again the competitions have a number of combined teams supporting clubs with low numbers at different ages. The U12 competition has 19 teams, U14's 10 teams and the U16's 9 teams. It is hoped there will be 7 teams in the U18 competition which will give us a good, strong, viable competition for boys of all ages in season 2013.

From the Board

AGM Season 2012

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for Season 2012 was held on Friday, April 5th at the Sport House.

The meeting saw the 2013 Lacrosse Victoria Board elected, and the LV Board for 2013 is:

President: Tim Fry

Vice President: Susanna Mullner

Secretary: Danny Whitbourn

Director of Finance: Adam Holmes

Ordinary Director: John Morgan

Ordinary Director: Max Lee

Ordinary Director: Carolyn Bolton

Ordinary Director: Cliff Jennings

Ordinary Director: Julie Evans

Lacrosse Victoria welcomes the new Board and looks forward to it continuing on the path as laid down by the Strategic Plan and looks forward to continued support from the Lacrosse Clubs and Members.

A special welcome to Carolyn Bolton, who joined the Board last year as a non-voting member. She is someone new to the sport and has agreed to nominate as an elected member and provide valuable impartial views.

We also give a special welcome to Julie Evans, who has nominated to become an elected member. She is an ex-lacrosse player who has decided to return to the sport at an executive level and provide a fresh, outsider view.

We wish the LV Board every success and will offer our full support in their endavours to make the sport more INCLUSIVE, ACCESSIBLE and WELCOMING to the people of Victoria.

As has been discussed at the AGM and the last President's meeting, the next important task on the agenda for improving the Governance of the sport, LV is looking for interested people to take up positions in our Sub-committees.

For our sport to govern successfully, we need a keen group of people to nominate for positions on these Sub-committees. This gives people the chance to support the sport, get an insight into the running of Lacrosse and can act as an introduction for taking on a position on the Board in the future, if desired.

We understand that everyone is short of spare time. Being able to share the load across the Sub-committes makes the task that bit easier, lightens the load all round and gives you the chance to contribute to the running and development of your favorite sport into the future. We would really appreciate you giving this matter your consideration.

More info will be up on our website shortly!

Good Governance - LV Making Big Steps

Gender balance in sporting organisations is becoming more and more important as Samantha Lane, reporter from The Age, points out in her article “Gender imbalance may cost top sports” (, March 21st, 2013). She claims that the Australian Sports Commission’s (ASC) seven most funded sporting organisations may have to make budget cuts if they don’t increase women participation on board level in the next 12 months.

ASC is now starting to work on the gender balance problem on national level; LV is already a step ahead at State Level. In cooperation with the Victorian Government, VicSport and VicHealth, LV has been working on the Good Governance Project and the State Sporting Association Participation Program to help improve Lacrosse Victoria’s Good Governance Practices.

The Lacrosse Victoria Board has made enormous progress over the past 18 months in successfully developing a strong foundation of good governance. The board now looks well positioned to build on their established framework that has been put in place by obvious commitment. Some of the main achievements include:

  • Participation in the Vicsport Good Governance Project which has provided the board and staff with support through training, resources and education
  • The development of a strategic plan which outlines a clear purpose and goals to guide the organisation over the next 5 years
  • Involvement of LaTrobe University Sports Management students at committee level for the first time
  • Establishment of a Good Governance Working Committee to take responsibility for the development of governance policies and procedures
  • Development of a comprehensive Board Manual and Election Kit including newly established documentation such as:
    • Board Role Description
    • Values and Conduct Statements (board and sub-committee)
    • Review of TOR for sub-committees
    • Induction Policy

The main goal of LV’s good governance program is continuing the work that we have done as well as creating a diverse leadership group will help make Lacrosse a more welcoming and inclusive Sport for all Victorians.

Rob Pettit Memorial Round

Lacrosse Victoria have decided to dedicate the opening round of season 2013 to Rob Pettit, a long serving Life Member of the sport.

He was a long serving player, supporter and official to his beloved sport, Lacrosse.

As a valuable member of the Past Player Association he became a regular part of the Coburg reunion functions. Wherever Lacrosse was played or discussed he would be there, surrounded by friends.

The back room of the MCC Lacrosse Club will seem empty without his presence and his place at the scorer's table of Junior and Senior MCC games will be sadly missed.

Rob was always first at the ground to open up and last to leave; some might have thought he was living there during the Lacrosse season.

He was watching the MILL competition, State games, Indoor Lacrosse, School competitions, driving Tennis competitors, and ushering Horse Racing patrons. You could guarantee he would pop up with his dry sense of humour. His talents were endless...

We will Remebr Him * 22/01/2013
