About Lacrosse Victoria

Introduction

Lacrosse Victoria is the administrative body for both men's and women's lacrosse throughout the State. With support from the Department of Victorian Communities (Sport and Recreation), the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (Vic Health), Lacrosse Victoria aims to:

  • facilitate participation in lacrosse at appropriate levels;
  • develop and promote a positive profile with clubs and other stakeholders;
  • market and promote the sport;
  • facilitate nationally accredited coaching and officiating programs;
  • conduct recruitment in schools; and
  • support club growth and development.

During 2007, Lacrosse Victoria became a single administration for both men's and women's lacrosse in Victoria. The By Laws of both Associations have been combined and amended.
In carrying out this work, it became obvious that prior to incorporation under the then new Victorian legislation an enormous amount of work was undertaken by Bill Taylor, the Secretary of the Association for a number of years. Lacrosse Victoria records with appreciation Bill's extensive contribution to the administration of the sport and many other aspects of the sport both on and off the field:

  • Bill was the first person in Victoria to advocate the use of two officials at a match
  • Around 1974 Bill took a team of indoor players to Canada to compete against the Canadians

Sports House

The move to Sports House in Albert Park during 2007 is a further indicator of our lacrosse future. The administration of both men's and women's lacrosse is located in the one office with other sports operating in Victoria. Lacrosse Victoria acknowledges the work of Bob Russell and Fergus Stewart in maintaining the interest of Lacrosse Victoria in this move over the long period of the preparation of Sports House.

Schools activity

Each year Lacrosse Victoria arranges an extensive primary and secondary schools program. These programs culminate in a primary and secondary schools competition. Dates for 2009 will be available on the website when agreed with schools.

Vic Health has funded the expansion of lacrosse into Bendigo under a Participation in Community Sport and Active Recreation (PICSAR) program.
